Interscholastic athletics/activities are an integral and meaningful part of the overall educational process. Our primary purpose is to complement and support the mission of the Galena School District by positively contributing to the academic achievement and persistence to graduation of our students, while at the same time providing opportunities for students to involve themselves in interscholastic athletics/activities.
Philosophy
- Our primary purpose is to complement and support the mission of the Galena School District by positively contributing to the academic achievement and persistence to graduation of our students, while at the same time providing opportunities for students to involve themselves in interscholastic athletics/activities.
- Our coaches' and sponsors' primary goal will always be to provide the best opportunity for all of our students to become the best versions of themselves during and after their seasons have completed.
Student Eligibility Standards
Students choosing to participate in a school activity must meet the eligibility standards set forth by the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) in addition to the following local school policy guidelines.
- In order to represent your school, you must be a bona fide student and meet all academic eligibility requirements. Students must be regularly attending classes and meet academic requirements as set in MSHSAA By-Law 2.3 as well as those of Galena High School.
- Students in grades 9-12:
- Must have earned a minimum of 3.0 credits in the preceding semester of attendance.
- Must be enrolled in and regularly attending courses that offer 3.0 credits.
- Students promoted for the first time to the 9th grade will be considered academically eligible for the first semester
- Students in Grades 6-8:
- Must be enrolled in a normal course load for your grade at your school.
- Will be ineligible of you failed more than one class the previous grading period (quarter/semester)
- Must have been promoted to a higher grade level prior to the first day of classes for the new school year
- Students entering 6th and 7th for the first time will be considered eligible for the first grading period after promotion (quarter/semester)
Academic Requirements for GHS Athletics/Activities
- Academic eligibility checks will be run at the conclusion of each quarter throughout the school year.
- Any student receiving 1 or more failing grades at the end of a quarter will be placed on academic probation for a period of two weeks. They may participate in practices, meetings, etc. but no interscholastic competition during this time period.
- If grade is improved to a passing grade they will be immediately restored to full eligibility. If grade remains failing after two weeks they will remain ineligible for competition for the remainder of the quarter.
- MSHSAA Academic Eligibility requirements remain in effect for semester grades.
Citizenship Standards
- Students wishing to participate in interscholastic athletics/activities at GHS must be credible citizens. Credible citizens are those whose conduct - both in school and out of school - will not reflect discredit on themselves or Galena High School.
- Conduct involving law enforcement MUST be reported to your principal or athletic director immediately as your conduct may affect eligibility or contest outcomes. Failure to report issues to your school will result in an automatic 365 days of ineligibility
- Committing an unsportsmanlike act while participating in an event could affect eligibility
- Spectators that conduct themselves in a way that is determined to be unsportsmanlike could be barred from further contests
- Unsportsmanlike conduct of any spectator, regardless of age, could cause that spectator to be barred from attending school contests
Specific Rules for Each Activity
Each coach, director, or sponsor will have specific rules and expectations for an activity. Because of club by-laws, constitutions, physical conditioning or training, safety procedures, tryouts, and practices, it is necessary for coaches, directors, or sponsors to design specific regulations to accommodate the variables in each activity. Players and parents will be made aware of these rules and procedures at a pre-season meeting held by the Coach of that particular sport and the Athletic Director. Attendance is expected.
